TopHat is the culmination of the love of antiques and the appreciation for the processes of old; we are adding TopHat TinType Photography Studio to the Gobles Antique Mall family with local events, as well as scheduled studio time and photo packages available.

What is a TinType?

A TinType is a image that is taken as a positive on a metal plate (modern days, aluminum) that forms on a layer of collodion and silver nitrate, and then is developed and fixed. This process is done in approx. 15 minutes of chemical processing, much like an old-school "Polaroid". Contrary to popular belief, exposure times are between 1 and 3 seconds on most sunny days.
